Do The Work

We are gambling with our business future when we leap into the unknown without doing the work or creating the disciplines that underpin a clear vision for the future model. Adopting a breakthrough attitude must involve an understanding that doing the right work, often unnatural work, is critical to success.

Matt Church is an author, keynote speaker, and entrepreneur who is fond of saying that action brings clarity. This has absolutely been my experience; however, the action he refers to is not blindly letting go of the known without first taking the time and space to plot the path forward. Doing the work means taking the time to get very clear on what your future business by design looks like. By designing your future, you will turn the invisible into the visible, and once the future is seen, it t can be pursued.

The work that, for many, is uncomfortable, beyond their technical skill and personally challenging is precisely the work that, if genuinely undertaken, can result in a business by design and a different future.

A business where balance is real and scalability is possible. Changing the way you do things that you have been doing for a long time may feel unpleasant, daunting and risky. Despite this, if you agree that the status quo is no longer acceptable and life wedged under the entrepreneurial ceiling is not much of a life, you can create a breakthrough mindset that, over time, will be clarified by action.

Change can be confronting. I am sure you can come up with a million reasons why you should do nothing and how doing something could go horribly wrong. Yes, you’re right; there is certainty in doing nothing, but at what cost? You will never have the rewards and choices that come with the creation of a business by design.

You might be able to fool others, but you can’t fool yourself. To adopt a breakthrough attitude requires accountability. It is important that, from the outset, you are honest with yourself. Like not speaking Voldemort’s name in the Harry Potter series, unspoken and unrecognised self-truths can leave us rooted to the spot and unable to move forward or backward. A breakthrough mindset requires radical self-assessment and absolute honesty. We must do the hard and uncomfortable work that brings these self-truths to the surface and enables us to address them. We must hear the divisive internal voices that are holding us back from breakthrough, from change, from our business by design.
