Brain Bubbles
By doing what most people do – that is, looking to implement a whole raft of creative brain bubbles willy-nilly without actually considering how they will affect your journey and how they will service your greater purpose – you are likely to do more harm than good.
Brain bubbles, implemented on the run and without alignment to a greater purpose, are unlikely to get the buy-in of the team. A strategic framework that has little understanding of how it contributes to breakthrough will just be tinkering and adding another burden- something to your already overwhelmed existence. Brain bubbles, although well-intentioned, if not part of a broader strategic game plan, are likely to confuse your people, burn precious time, erode resources and badly affect culture and confidence.
Abraham Lincoln famously said, ‘Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.’ The message is clear: stop being busy, take the time to get your strategic aspiration aligned with your purpose, and stop hacking away at your business with a blunt axe.
My favourite saying from the Greek philosopher Socrates is, ‘The secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.’ If you can focus your energy and attention on the greater why and align your aspiration and strategic direction with your purpose, you are in the right place to have a meaningful tilt at breakthrough and building a business by design.
