Start With Why
The shift successful entrepreneurs make that enables them to create extraordinary businesses is that they take the time to think through why they do what they do and how it aligns with their larger purpose. It's often useful to reflect on when we started or acquired our business and ask what it was that we were looking to achieve and why. What purpose did it serve to take the leap?
In your current business context, the why can produce profound insights into a more effective business model. Why do we compete the way we do in the markets we serve? What if we were to diversify into more profitable, less competitive markets? What if we build this capability to drive into that market? Learn to take the time to explore and consider. Work on the business, not just in it as the technician. Take yourself beyond the role of an employee and position yourself as a leader with a why and a purpose others would want to follow.
So many of you short-cut the 'why' in favour of the 'how', and there is a good reason for this. The 'how' is the natural bias to activity that has served you, the entrepreneur, so well. There is no shortage of 'how' for creative people. But if you start at the how without considering the why and the broader purpose of what you wish to achieve, it will be difficult to progress your transformation and breakthrough. You are likely to burn considerable resources, enact change fatigue in your people and damage business confidence – most notably your own.
It is in knowing the why before embarking on the how – by deliberately creating strategic goals and tactical clarity, then unleashing your entrepreneurial bias to act – that you can commence transformation and truly build a business by design that gives you the lifestyle, freedom and choice you crave.
