Clarity is the key to great business performance

What is happening today in our business is the result of the strategic decisions we made in the past. What will happen in our business in the future will be the result of the strategic decisions we make today. A successful strategic push can be more about what we leave behind on the cutting room floor as opposed to what we move ahead with.

In his amazing book ‘Good to Great’, Jim Collins calls this the Hedge Hog concept. He uses Isaiah Berlin’s famous essay “The Hedgehog and the Fox.” To demonstrate the genius insight of simplicity. The fox, despite its superior cunning is unable to trap the Hedgehog. Every time the Hedgehog senses danger, it simply rolls into a spiky ball and the fox calls off the attack.

Imagine you are a bus driver, randomly picking up passengers at any old bus stop you happen upon. After all, the business goal is to pick up as many passengers as we can right? On the surface, without a decisive route it may appear that we are successful, however without understanding our clear strategic direction we are unlikely to be effectual.
