It breaks my heart when I see hard working business owners working so hard, day after day, and not getting the rewards they deserve. I am obsessed with business growth and have dedicated the last twenty-plus years helping business owners realise the potential of their business.

Operating Systems

An operating system is a proven methodology that when applied and followed achieves a consistent result. Unfortunately, there are many businesses where the owner is the operating system. A broad ranging depth of operational knowledge mixed with a potent mixture of learning and experience ensures the owner can solve most of the daily issues. This is obviously a good thing and generally results in consistent operational outcomes.

…Until it doesn’t.

The owner as a single point of failure is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode, but what is the alternative? The alternative of course, is well known. Create operating systems which prescribe how others will do what you once did.

Creating operating systems and transitioning through the entrepreneurial ceiling is like letting out the clutch of a manual car whilst simultaneously applying gentle pressure to the accelerator to create motion. It is a delicate operation contingent upon timing that once practiced and mastered becomes second nature. This is how to create transformational operating systems.

Start by prioritising operational tasks which will afford the greatest freedoms for you, the owner, with the lowest customer risk profile. The trick is to do this whilst simultaneously and gradually releasing the reigns, giving people under you the time and training to adopt the business systems you are creating and build capability.

Getting this transition right can provide the most amazing outcomes. Firstly, confidence grows, then belief ensues. Next, business vulnerability and key person risk decreases as knowledge transfers to others. It is here that operational dependence on you, the owner, decreases and you have the clean air to think, to grow the business, and to become the visionary you always knew you could be.

Luckily, the processes to achieve this transformation do not need to be discovered through trial and error. They are well known. You can spend years trying to innovate and learn these things the hard way, or you can short cut the process and take the lessons from those that have gone before you.
